Open bite

Nonsurgical correction of a high-angle Class III open bite in a 16-year-old girl

16-year-old girl, near the end of growth

The lesson

In high-angle Class III open bite cases, palatal expansion can transiently worsen the open bite through buccal molar tipping, but this is temporary and can be resolved with vectored elastics, muscular exercises, and tongue control, allowing surgery to be avoided even in a borderline adult case.
